Statement from Landon Webb's parents

We are so relieved and pleased that Landon has communicated with us and is safe and well. As his parents, we very much want to support Landon to lead a healthy and happy life. We are frustrated that there are few options in Nova Scotia for people who have different abilities. We hope that we can work with Landon and the Department of Community Services to come up with a plan that meets Landon’s needs and helps him to safely lead the life he wants.

Advocating Parents of Nova Scotia is extremely concerned about the lack of adequate supports for persons with disabilities in this Province. For a young man like Landon Webb, an institution such as Quest is not an appropriate solution. The lack of supports for people who have intellectual disabilities to lead the lives they choose is leading to crisis situations for many families – including the Webb's. We call on Premier McNeil and the Department of Community Services to adopt the original changes proposed in the ‘Roadmap’ – the plan that could have transformed services in this province. The time has come to close institutions that incarcerate, offer real solutions and supports to the parents who are undertaking the bulk of the care for adults with intellectual disabilities in Nova Scotia, and move to person-directed models of support as soon as possible.
